Kathleen Maynard Obituary
Kathleen Frances Maynard (née Bulbrook) passed away on 26 February 2026 at the age of 79. Her passing was sudden but peaceful.
Kay was predeceased by her sister Maureen and by her husband John. She is survived by her niece Mandi, with whom she shared a home in Ashford, Kent for the past twenty years. Kay was also predeceased by her siblings Florence, Doris, Rosina, Robert, Leslie and John.
Like her siblings, Kay's life was shaped by the challenges and spirit of post-war London. From an early age she learned resilience and self-sufficiency, leaving school at fifteen to begin work after the death of her father. Though family members later scattered in different directions, they reconnected in the 1970s and maintained strong bonds over the years.
Kay worked for many years as a shorthand typist. At one point she moved to Cornwall, where she owned and operated a riding stables while still maintaining full-time employment, a reflection of the determination and energy that marked much of her life.
Her resilience was matched by a deep sense of empathy. Kay had a lifelong love of animals and was known for rescuing and caring for many over the years, from greyhounds (a love inherited from her father) to cats, geese, chickens, ducks and terrapins, and even the occasional more unusual household resident.
Kay also had a wide range of interests. She enjoyed genealogy and Tudor history, particularly the life of Richard III, and loved tap dancing, organizing a small group that performed at local nursing homes. She also spent time teaching adults to read and write, something that gave her great satisfaction.
She was also known for two very enthusiastic collections: shoes and pens. Kay had a particular love of calligraphy and accumulated thousands of pens over the years. The pen collection was rivaled only by a wardrobe of shoes that reflected her lively sense of style.
In accordance with her wishes, no funeral service will be held.
