Sorry to hear of the passing of John. A lovely man who could never get my name right first time.

So sorry to hear the sad news recently. John was such a big influence during my adolescence. My first memories of John are his involvement in running the Newmarket Branch ITFC Supporters Club and bus that took me to my first games at Portman Road. Look at the legacy he has left me with on that front alone!
A couple of years later I got involved with his beloved, or bemoaned at times, Freshfield Spartans FC. Getting there early to help put the nets up I would be rewarded with tea and toast back at the Ransome house before the game.
Being a bit young for the rigours of Sunday morning football, in those early days I would often end up running the line, sometimes with John refereeing the game. I think he saw that I had a decent knowledge of the laws of the game and encouraged me to take the referee course that he ran. With John's tutoring I passed a few months later.
There are many others out there who will remember the time and effort that John put into these activities, and will remain forever grateful for having been lucky enough to have benefitted from his generosity, guidance and friendship.
