June 16, 1931 - January 24, 2025
John Richard "Dick" Means, 93, passed away on January 24, 2025, in Green Valley, AZ.
Born on June 16, 1931, in Madison, WI, Dick built a remarkable life through hard work, determination and an infectious sense of humor. He began his career in the mailroom of Skelly Oil Company in 1955 and steadily advanced as the company transitioned from Skelly to Getty to Texaco, retiring in 1987. His ingenuity led him to discover a use for petroleum coke byproducts, launching another 30-year career with The Defler Corporation. A true industry leader, he often referred to himself as a "peddler."
Beyond his professional success, Dick shared 76 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Ruby. He took immense pride in his role as a father, grandfather and mentor, always offering wisdom and encouragement. His presence brought comfort and laughter to those around him.
An avid golfer, Dick spent countless hours on the course with friends and family. He found joy in watching his children's sporting events and loved tinkering around the house and garden. A natural storyteller with a sharp wit, he often advised, "If you can't dazzle people with your brilliance, baffle them with bullsh*t." He embraced life wholeheartedly and never shied away from a challenge.
Dick enjoyed gathering with friends and was involved with the Elks Club, further cementing his place as a respected figure in his community. He was an active member of Desert Hills Lutheran Church where a Celebration of Life will be held on March 15, 2025 at 10 a.m., located at 2150 S. Camino Del Sol in Green Valley, AZ.
He is survived by his six children; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby; his brother, Dwayne; and his sister, Esther.
Dick's legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his wisdom, humor and unwavering love.
