It was with great sadness that I learnt of Ian´s passing - definitely my favorite ex-boss. I have so many wonderful memories from him asking me "what does a young man like yourself get up to on a weekend in Gabs?" - was it a test question?? Haha! Or working on the "a Big World needs a Big Bank" campaign. Best of all was the "Be Proud" emails he´d send us every December - notwithstanding all the mistakes we might have made in the preceding 11 months. RIP boss - thank you for the memories.

Ian was the best boss I have ever had. Firm but kind. Wickedly funny. Sharp as a tack. He was a mentor, not just to me, but to so many of my peers in Barclays Africa. He truly nurtured us. I consider myself privileged to have been able to call him a friend and used to so enjoy our catch ups in London. Ian was so incredibly loving and proud of his family and my thoughts are with you all. He was much loved and will be much missed by all who knew him.

I was also a colleague of Ian at Barclays in Africa. Echoing others comments, Ian truly was a very nice man and hugely supportive at work. I remember with great pleasure his visits to Africa, especially to South Africa and Egypt. An evening of great fun and great wine (maybe too much) springs to mind at Vergelegan Estate. My condolences to Ian´s family; keep those memories fresh.

Terribly sad to hear this news.I had the good fortune to be part of Ian's team at Barclays Africa and have great memories of working for and alongside Ian. Fantastically bright - in his own word having "a brain the size of a planet"; warm, funny and terrific company - I have memories of conferences in The Seychelles and Cape Town as well as dinners in Jo'burg and Nairobi and all points in between. My condolences to his family - I raise a glass of red to a great man.

I worked with Ian during my time at Barclays Africa. He was such a kind, supportive fun man. A gentleman with a twinkle in his eye - always at the heart of a party. He often spoke of his family with such love and pride. He was an encouraging teacher who knew how to combine getting the work done with having a laugh. Sending much love to his family. Victoria

I worked with Ian during my Barclays Africa days. He was always so kind. Always finding ways to include and teach in a fun way. He was usually the life and soul of the party, with a twinkle in his eye. He loved his family and talked about them often with such pride.
Sending thoughts and prayers. Victoria

I worked for Ian during my Barclays Africa days, he was one of my favourite bosses and I was also lucky enough to consider him a friend. He always had such wise words and advice and was such fun to work with.

I had such good memories of trips to Africa with him, usually drinking far too much and having to make up that there were more people at the drinks than were really there to justify the bar bill. His favourite way of telling me I had done a good job was to describe it as `barely adequate´. I will so miss my lunches in London with him and catching up on his news and him sharing his advice with me. Ian was a true Gentleman and will be sadly missed by everyone whose life he touched. I will raise a glass of bubbles to him when I see Linda next. Thank you for everything Ian
